The correct steering for your modular vehicle

How to choose the right steering rod setting for your vehicle.

When you create a module vehicle in HeavyGoods (for instructions see Assemble modular vehicles using the build kit ), you sometimes have to select your desired steering function from a dropdown field in HeavyGoods. The options are called, for example, I - E or I - F.

What do these letter combinations like "I - E" mean?

Goldhofer's modular system allows you to flexibly assemble vehicles of different lengths from several vehicle modules on your premises. In doing so, the chassis of the Goldhofer modular system have a rod linkage that determines the steering angles of the various axles when cornering. However, a short vehicle requires different steering than a long vehicle. Therefore, you can flexibly change the steering linkage by hooking the steering rods into different suspension points depending on the length of your vehicle. These suspension points are designated by Goldhofer with individual letters.

To ensure that your rod-steered vehicle exhibits good driving behavior, the manufacturer Goldhofer recommends specific suspension points for the various possible vehicle combinations. You will receive these via the Goldhofer easyVERSION program mostly in the form of a table which describes at which points you have to hook in the various steering rods. In the last line of the table, read off which suspension points must be used to connect the rearmost steering rod of the vehicle to the last axle. For a 10-axle vehicle, for example, this line is labeled U - 10 and, depending on the vehicle type, has the value I - E, for example. This means: The bell crank lever is connected to axle 10 by hooking the front eye of the steering rod into hook-in point I of the bell crank lever and the rear eye of the steering rod into hook-in point E of axle 10.

How do I now set the steering?

In HeavyGoods, the linkage steering described above is already stored in the according chassis data set. All you have to do is select the value I - E in the Steering function field in HeavyGoods, for example, and you will receive an appropriately steering vehicle with which you can simulate driving maneuvers in HeavyGoods (Instructions: Simulate swept paths).
